The story opens on the third of May, 1977 on a morning when the Lee family gets ready to have breakfast. Knowingly to them, Lydia, the middle daughter in the family is dead. Marilyn inspects her daughter’s room but sees nothing wrong so she returns to the kitchen where Nath tells Marilyn that he heard the radio on from Lydia’s room at 11:30 the night before. Marilyn remains at home and decides to go looking for Lydia while Nath take the other two children to school.
Marilyn first calls the school but finds that Lydia is not there. Then, she looks all over the house but finds nothing. Then Marilyn calls her husband, James who works as a university teacher. James has a Chinese assistant named Louisa and it is hinted that there may be something going on between Louisa and James.
James goes home and then contacts the police, reporting Lydia as missing. The policemen try to reassure the family that everything is alright and tells the parents that most likely, Lydia ran away from home and will return in less than 24 hours. One of the police officers also mentions that Marilyn went ‘’missing’’ a few years back thus hinting that there might have been problems in the family unknown to the others. The police ask Marilyn and James to write a list of all of Lydia’s friends but Nath notes how none of the people her parents wrote on the list are Lydia’s friends. Instead, those girls use Lydia to help them with their homework and nothing more. In fact, Nath knows that Lydia has only one friend, a boy named Jack but he doesn’t say anything about Jack because he knows that his parents would be disappointed to hear it.
The days pass and one day, the family receives a call from the police asking them if Lydia liked to swim. James tells the police that Lydia refused to learn how to swim because she was afraid to go into deep water. On the same day, the police shows up to the house telling them that Lydia was found dead, drowned in the lake.
In the second chapter, information about Marilyn, James and their families are given. Marilyn was always a competitive person and despite being told that she can’t do certain things because she was girl, she was determined to prove those who doubted her that she is capable of great things. Marilyn was among the first in her class but despite this her mother stull urged her to become a house wife. Marilyn’s mother, Doris, was a teacher at the school where Marilyn learned and she was left by her husband when Marilyn was just three years old.
Marilyn gets accepted into collage and she pursues her dream of becoming a doctor. Her mother tells Marilyn that she will eventually meet the right man and settle down but Marilyn refuses to believe her. In the end, it is proven that Doris was right when Marilyn meets James at the college where she ends up learning. James was giving lectures at the University and on day, after he finished his lecture, a boy screamed after him because he was an Asian. Marilyn goes to him to apologize for the way the boy behaved and then kisses him. When James tells Marilyn that they can’t be together because he is her teacher, she drops out of his class so their relationship will not be a problem. The two however do not reveal the truth about their parents and chose instead to ignore their presence.
When the school year ends, James thinks that he will be offered a teaching position at Harvard but is not so he has to accept a teaching job at a less renewed college. Marilyn also finds that she is pregnant so the couple decides to marry and Marilyn gives up her dreams of becoming a doctor.
When Marilyn’s mother finds about her daughter’s marriage, she is thrilled to see that her daughter ended up doing what she was told to do but shocked to see that the man she chose was an Asian one. Marilyn will always think with sadness about the fact that the last time she saw her mother was at her weeding and they were arguing about Marilyn’s choices.
In the third chapter, the narrator presents Lydia’s funeral. James insisted on having a close casket funeral because Lydia’s face was damaged during the time her body spent in the lake. During the funeral, the family refuses to look at the casket because they know that Lydia’s body is in there. Nath choses to look at Jack and imagines himself interrogating him after the funeral, asking him whether he has any connection with Lydia’s death. After the funeral, Nath goes to Jack but James insists that Nath leaves the investigation for the police.
Nath doesn’t tell his parents that Jack has the reputation of seducing girls and sleeping around and he also doesn’t tell his parent that Lydia was secretly seeing him and meeting with him all summer long. James leaves with the car and the rest of the family so Nath has to walk home alone. When he reaches his house, he sees that a police car is in front of Jack’s house so he decides to listen in. he then finds that Lydia was stressed because of her grader, her parents and about her brother leaving for college. Nath returns home to find his sister and mother in their rooms and his father nowhere to be seen.
James decides to return to his office where he continued to look over Lydia’s autopsy record. Louise comes in his office and takes James to her apartment where they have sexual intercourse. Meanwhile, at home, Marilyn sits in Lydia’s room and thinks how she will do everything she can to find why her daughter died.
In the fourth chapter, the narrator reveals what happened when Marilyn disappeared for a short period of time. The event happened after her mother’s death and Marilyn realized that she was slowly becoming the person her mother was. After dealing with her mother’s possessions, Marilyn returned home and decided to leave her family and go finish her studies and become a doctor. Even though it pains her to do it, Marilyn takes some money from her family and then one day suddenly disappears without even leaving a note for her husband.
James spends his summer calling the police to ask wheatear they have information about Marilyn’s disappearance but the police suggest that Marilyn left on her own and so there is nothing they can do. James tries to take care of his children but he is constantly reminded that Marilyn used to do things differently.
Meanwhile, Marilyn began her studies again and was successful in passing her midterms. She one day suddenly faints and realizes that she is pregnant. The hospital calls James and Marilyn realizes that she must return home and give up her dreams of becoming a doctor. She decides however to make sure that Lydia will have her dreams fulfilled and begins teaching her about science, math, physics and chemistry while ignoring Nath and his interests completely. Then, one day, Nath pushes Lydia into the lake when her parents are not home. Nath pulls her out and realizes that even if Lydia were to disappear, her memory would still linger and affect Marilyn and James.
After Lydia’s death, Hannah leaves her home as well one night and goes to the lake where Lydia drowned. The next morning, her parents argue saying that someone forgot to put the chain on the door. Hannah however remains silent and doesn’t tell them that she left in the middle of the night.
The police think that Lydia’s death was a suicide and when they come to the Lee’s house, they tell the parents that Lydia was a loner at school. Despite this, Marilyn still claims that Lydia was a happy girl and that someone must have taken her. The police then talks with Nath and they ask him if their parents ever mistreated Lydia or if she showed signs of being depressed but Nath insists that everything was normal. After the police leaves, James and Marilyn have a fight and Nath and Hannah go to the lake where they sit in silence. Nath sees Jack coming home from school and he gets ready to go fight him but he is stopped by Hannah.
At home, Marilyn goes through Lydia’s things once more and she is shocked when she finds in one of Lydia’s books a pack of cigarettes and a pack of condoms. Marilyn lies to herself that the things she found were not Lydia’s.
In the next chapter, the narrator reveals that Lydia’s performance at school started dropping around 6 months before her death. Just around the same time, Nath was accepted into Harvard but Lydia hid his acceptance letter because she didn’t want her brother to leave. When Marilyn finds that Lydia failed on of her physic test, he pinned the failed test on the refrigerator and then worked with Lydia for days to help her retake the test. On Christmas, Lydia received form her parents books about science and self-help books that had the purpose of helping her make friends and blend in. however, what Lydia wanted to receive as a present was a necklace or some other piece of unimportant jewelry.
Marilyn continues to pressure Lydia to do better in school despite having better grades while James urges Marilyn to make more friends. In order to rebel against her parents and Nath, Lydia one day asks Jack for a ride home. Jack agrees but asks her if her parents or brother would not mind her being in the same car with a boy with a bad reputation. Jack realizes that Lydia is unhappy with her life and something akin a friendship forms between the two. The two spend their time talking and smoking and Jack even offers himself to teach Lydia how to drive. Jack asks questions about Nath and even though Lydia is angry with him, she is happy to answer to him.
Around that time, James brings Lydia a new gift, a necklace he picked out with Louise and Lydia suspects that the two are having an affair. Lydia takes her first driving test but fails it and she panics, thinking that she will trapped forever with her parents and no way of escaping. When they get back home, Lydia pretends that everything is alright but Hannah sees that Lydia is upset. She also wonders why no one else sees how much Lydia is struggling to keep up appearances.
In the summer after Lydia’s death, things are even tenser in the house. Nath waits to leave for college, Marilyn refuses to accept that Lydia killed herself like the police concluded and James spends his time at Louise’s apartment. Nath continues to insist that Jack was the one who killed Lydia but Hannah knew that it was not the truth since she suspected that Jack had a secret crush on Nath.
When James doesn’t return home that night, Nath suggests that his father is with Louisa. Marilyn then drives to Louisa’s apartment and tells her to tell James that she will be waiting for him at home. When James arrives, Marilyn asks him for how long the affair has been going. Then, she suggests that he would be happier if he had married a woman like Louise. After James leaves angrily, Marilyn destroys the science books and posters in Lydia’s room until she finds an old cookbook she took from her mother’s house after she died. In that moment, Marilyn realized that Lydia didn’t loved science but that she loved Marilyn and wanted to make her happy. After her realization, Hannah comes in the room and Marilyn embraces her youngest daughter.
Nath also runs and ends up in the same city where his mother ran away to. There, he thinks about his family until Officer Fiske comes and speaks to him in a gentle manner, telling him that it is time for him to go home.
In chapter eleven, the narrator reveals the events that took place before Lydia’s death. On that weekend, Nath left for a weekend at Harvard and Lydia remained behind. She tried to call her brother once but he dismissed her quickly, telling her to call Jack instead. When Lydia meets Jack, she proposed to him to have sex but he refused, confessing that he is in love with Nath and that the only reason he sleeps around is to throw away any suspicions some may have about his sexuality. After hearing this, Lydia returned home where she had to listen to Nath telling James and Marilyn about his trip to Harvard. That night, Lydia decided to go for a walk and when she reached the lake, she decided that she can’t let others dictate her life and that she must conquer her fears. She then took the boat, rowed it into the middle of the lake and jumped into the water despite not knowing how to swim.
The last chapter presents the way the Lee family decided to deal with their loss. James returned home and for the first time in years he took the time to comfort Hannah and to play with her. Marilyn was pleased to see her husband interacting with their child and they decided to forgive one another. Then next morning, Nath wakes up to see Jock walking his dog so he runs after him and starts punching him. Hannah runs after them and Jack admits that he is in love with Nath while Nath continues to punch him. Nath falls into the lake and as he sinks he thinks about the way their future will turn out to be. At the same time, he reaches for Jack’s outstretched hand, determined to stop letting the past determine his future.
